The tradition of bird-and-flower painting, whereby plants and birds can be appreciated and enjoyed by viewers without going outdoors, has been passed down throughout the ages and through various schools. Along with shan shui landscape painting and portrait painting, bird-and-flower painting is a traditional genre of eastern painting, including works that depict flowers alone, as well as those that also feature insects such as bees and butterflies, those that show carp in bodies of water, and even those that feature animals and other creatures.
The Kano school was established during the Edo Period (1603-1868) at a time when artists were encouraged to develop more distinctive styles. With this, the expressions and techniques appearing in bird-and-flower painting became more varied and many beautiful works were produced. The first room of this exhibition introduces bird-and-flower paintings by those identified with the Edo Kano school, a school that developed new forms of expression while continuing stable production of works for the shogunate. Meanwhile, the second room will showcase a wide variety of bird-and-flower paintings by individually recognized artists, including colorful and highly realistic works by So Shiseki and well as paintings by Shen Quan, and also Hoitsu Sakai and Kiitsu Suzuki of the Edo Rimpa school.
