Reijiro Wada
Reijiro Wada’s works transcend eras to find origins in ancient art history, referencing 17th century Flanders paintings and motifs of vanitas that appear in them. The influences of Bauhaus, land art, and the avant-garde can also be seen in his installations. Wada’s “Scarlet” series, notably “Scarlet Window” (2016), exemplifies his use of rich, deep colors. The title of the work “French Window” is a play on that of Duchamp’s “Fresh Widow” (1920), in which a piece of black leather covers the glass of a “window” that cannot be seen through or into, thereby questioning the act of seeing itself. “Scarlet” poses a similar paradox: this window contains wine, a liquid that ferments over time, and forms a wall that neither light nor air can pass through. Its function as a window is negated, rendering it a silent object.
