Chie Matsui “Picture, and Its Friends”

This event has ended.
Chie Matsui is a graduate of Kyoto City University of Arts graduate school. Since the 1980s, she has produced many installation works and has presented her work internationally, at events such as Venice Biennale and venues including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Matsui has been producing video works for her renowned “Heidi” series as of 2000. Alongside installations and video works, she has continued to produce drawings that correspond to these pieces. The artist has referred to her works produced in the second half of the 1990s in metaphorical terms as “vessels for allegory.” Often created in the space the story originates from, her works become containers for the stories they tell.
In 2007 MEM held an exhibition of paintings titled “Allegorical Vessels” that consisted of Matsui’s oil paintings and drawings. She then presented the show “Ms. piece,” featuring drawings made everyday, in 2014, hosted at the same time and venue as the Yokohama Triennale.
This exhibition will present new oil paintings and other paper “pictures” that incorporate various drawing materials. Here Matsui will show fable-like images that she refers to as “pictures” as opposed to “artworks.”
