Matej Andraž Vogrinčič
Through his site-specific artworks created in urban and natural environments since the early 1990s, Matej Andraž Vogrinčič has visualized the identities of communities, traditions, and histories of various locations by filling everyday scenes with commonplace materials. He has earned an international reputation for his participation in Venice Biennale in 1999 and Liverpool Biennial in 2006, and for his contribution to the Slovenia Pavilion at Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China.
As for his activities in Japan, he presented an installation work in Beppu Contemporary Art Festival 2015 where he stacked a tremendous volume of cube sugar. The work was inspired by the exhibition venue, which was originally the warehouse of a store that handled rice, oil, and sugar. At Saitama Triennale 2016, he exhibited a large-scale installation visualizing the art festival concept - “Envisioning the Future!” - and the idea of Saitama City being a major suburban “bedtown” outside Tokyo.
For this, his first solo exhibition at Kana Kawanishi Gallery, Vogrinčič will present a site-specific installation produced for his Tokyo residency that is inspired by the fact the gallery space was originally a karate dojo. Photographs of his previous site-specific works created around the world will also be exhibited.
