Artists

Hiroshi Mori
Hiroshi Mori produces stunning works that glisten from the light that reflects on their surface. The pictorial compositions are reminiscent of classical religious paintings by old masters in the West, though Mori substitutes people with anime characters in order to create playful works that have a unique texture characterized by an unnatural homogeneity. The uncanny nostalgia that his works invoke cause confused viewers to stop and take stock. For though they have a smooth and resplendent appearance, Mori’s artworks contain elements that catch the viewer’s eye and causes them to pause. They are structured around a plethora of popular images recognizable from the public sphere, referencing scenes from famous movies and masterpieces of Eastern and Western art, but showing figures swapped with recognizable characters from animations that are rendered in a manga style. This appropriation of motifs from preexisting images is no longer rare, but there is no doubt that Mori’s paintings are linked to their unique genealogy. Working as an artist of the Internet generation, he senses the disillusionment of objectivity and recognizes the impossibility and meaninglessness of seeking out “original” images. For this reason, instead of focusing on infinitely reproduced images, Mori hones in on the “ghosts of images” that exist in our memory. He fuses these separate images plucked from entirely different contexts in order to produce original works that transcend the inherent incompatibility of their subjects.
