From the Terada Collection 058 Black & White: Colours

Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery
Finished

Artists

Takasada Matsutani, Hotaro Koyama, Shinro Otake, Tatsuoki Nanbata, Lee Ufan et al.
While thus far exhibits of the Terada Collection have focused on black and white works, this show incorporates color as another element. The works on display demonstrate the struggles of their artists to strike balances between expression and restraint. Lee Ufan’s traces of paint convey his gestures as they occur. Takasada Matsutani’s dollops of paint bring out the textures of the medium. Yuji Akatsuka explores form by seeming to press the paint firmly into the canvas. Kazuo Shiraga paints with dangling rope and his feet. All of these works allow for spontaneity giving rise to a wealth of diversity in expression, the essence of the Terada Collection.
