Along with the advent of silent film in Japan, performers known as “benshi” were introduced. These individuals would provide live narration alongside the projected images. Acting as though they were strange translators, they would stand beside the screen and subjectively interpret the movie scenes as they unfolded. They had the ability to tie stories together, to solve problems, or to change the shape the narrative took. Here they had a hidden opportunity to re-express the story being told.
