Since 2005, the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, has held a series of artist talks in which currently active artists speak in front of their own works shown in exhibitions from the museum’s collection. This series was originally launched in hopes of offering a friendly introduction to contemporary art that deepens viewers’ understanding of the works, but now that 30 talks have been video-recorded, it can also be viewed as a historical record of what the artists were thinking at the time.

The talks presented thus far have dealt with works in various fields, but the current exhibition focuses on sculpture, showing digest versions of videos of the talks alongside works from the museum’s collection. The three sculptors appearing – Hirotake Kurokawa, Wakiro Sumi, and Shigeo Toya – have all been exhibiting since the 1970s, and have all fundamentally reexamined what it means to make things, pursuing new possibilities in sculptural expression. The museum hopes that these talks and works, presented together, will provide a newfound appreciation of the issues the artists have addressed and the outcomes of their endeavors.
