Gramophone Concert “Jazz Summit (43) – Hawkins’ European Travels”

Intermediatheque
Finished
This series of gramophone concerts is held regularly within Intermediatheque’s Lecture Theatre Academia. It focuses on the Satoshi Yuze record collection, presenting a selection of famous 1920-1940s jazz recordings played on the illustrious Victrola Credenza and other gramophones sharing a quality of sound that has now vanished from public spaces. In the spring of 1934, Coleman Hawkins made his debut in London at the famous Palladium Theatre. As the main soloist of the Fletcher Henderson orchestra, he built up the language of modern jazz saxophone and spent five years touring in Europe until the outbreak of the war. During this period, while popularizing new American music by playing with local musicians, he absorbed the cultural traditions of the Old World. This concert comprehensively covers Hawkins’ musical experience in Europe, from his recordings in London to his sessions in Paris with Django Reinhardt.
