There are currently various movements aiming to organize ongoing art activities rooted in regional areas throughout Japan. This shift has not occurred suddenly, however, as there have been changes in the social environment surrounding art, and various forerunners in the background. This event aims to establish the current situation of contemporary art in Gumma. To this end, the exhibition will look back to the 1980s and through documentation trace the lineage of contemporary art from past to present. It will also focus on around 15 contemporary artists currently based in the prefecture, introducing two-dimensional works, sculptural works, installations and performances. There are various reasons why these artists work out of Gunma, and through their creative activities one can think about the possibilities for contemporary art in the region, and how to engage the community.
