Tomo Hirai “45-year Trajectory - From Italy”

Kakiden Gallery

Artists

Tomo Hirai
Ceramic artist Tomo Hirai believes that, “[As a Japanese person,] if you live abroad then it is unavoidable that you become conscious of Japan.” Considering that he resides in Italy, it could also be said that Hirai is also conscious of Italy it a way that Italians are not. He is passionate about the soft and warm texture of the soil in Maiolica, and the porcelain that is produced in this sunny region in the Mediterranean. Many of Hirai’s own ceramic works feature motifs inspired by traditional Maiolica pottery, such as the waves, hearts and flower patterns that can be seen in the small plates presented here. The way he glazes some sections while choosing to leave other parts unglazed can be considered a unique aspect of his work.
