This exhibition showcases over 70 works of art from Europe, the US, and Japan from the collection of the Fukuoka Art Museum, currently undergoing renovation. From surrealism to post-war abstract to pop art, the exhibition covers a wide range of European and American art history, while also showing pieces from Japanese post-war movements such as Group Kyushu and Gutai. This is a unique opportunity to view works from the avant-garde Group Kyushu which stood in contrast to the dominant art scene in Tokyo.

Group Kyushu- An Anti-Establishment Story: From the 1950s through the 60s, Group Kyushu was an avant-garde movement that left a strong influence on the post-war Japanese art scene. Fukuoka Art Museum has gathered over 30 years of research of the group and its now legendary activities. Former Group Kyushu member from 1957 to 1962 Mokuma Kikuhata and organizer of 2015’s Group Kyushu exhibition Yozo Yamaguchi gather to talk about the group.
