Azamino Photo Annual: Shingo Kanagawa “Long Time Span”

Yokohama Civic Gallery, Azamino
Finished

Artists

Shingo Kanagawa
The eighth Azami Photo Annual exhibition introducing works of contemporary photography spotlights Shingo Kanazawa, who published the photo collection “father” in 2016 and has taken his practice in various directions besides photography.

Since 2008 Kanazawa’s “father” series has been documenting his own father, who repeatedly disappears. The series calls into question the meaning of human existence when people vanish from society for no apparent reason. In 2010 Kanazawa started another series focused on his aunt, who disappeared more than 20 years ago.

This exhibition focuses on photographs from both of these series, including works that have never been shown before. While reexamining the fundamentals of human existence in which people fulfill promises to society through predetermined roles, these works also prompt us to reconsider the meaning of photography as a medium.
