Zac Mehdid
In his recent work, Zac looks at identity as an abstract texture formed by an endless process where experiences continuously transform the existing surface by juxtaposing on each other. Each time a new experience is ‘absorbed’ into the existing texture, it takes a new appearance, which we inaccurately try to define. Indeed, it is simply a sum of abstract layers and therefore cannot be defined but only felt.
For this exhibition, the artist focuses on the impact of waves on identity.
‘In Japan, waves have significant importance in the building of the country’s identity. From Hokusai’s famous painting to ripples in temples’ ponds, the Kamikaze typhoon, or the 2011 tsunami; waves have protected, destroyed, and shaped Japan.
“The Great Waves off Shinagawa” are a series of abstract paintings each made of many layers coated with wave-like surface on top, aiming to depict the impact of waves on the existing textures of the paintings.’
