Kunié Sugiura
Spotlighting Kunié Sugiura, a pioneering photographer who first encountered the medium as a student at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1963. Sugiura was quick to focus on the expressive potential of photography, using experimental techniques such as fish eye lenses and distortion, collages of portraits and landscapes, solarization, and combinations of black and white and color photography. In 1967 Sugiura moved to New York and with the intention of smashing the traditions and underpinnings of photography began blending photography and painting practices, becoming swept up in the 1960s U.S. art scene while continuing to refine her own approach. This exhibition looks back on her career of more than 50 years.
