Tokuro Sakamoto “False Vacuum”

Artists

Tokuro Sakamoto
After studying Nihonga at Tokyo University of Arts and furthermore at Nihonga-juku, Sakamoto has based his work on capturing everyday scenes as he sees them. His paintings are based on recreating photographs he himself has taken and at first glance appear to be commonplace. However, Sakamoto deftly uses composition and human presence in his work to create a distinct atmosphere. The title of this exhibition, “White Out” refers to the blank state of the minds of the viewer, as scenes play out before the view who has nothing on his or her mind. They are visions that occur when time diverges from consciousness such as clouds floating in the sky or carp seen through water.
