Ad Minoliti, Yin Ho, Emi Otaguro
Even as science and technology have reached new heights, the need to ask “why” still exists. Ad Minoliti, Yin Ho, and Emi Otaguro are artists who differ from each other in country of birth, culture, and native language, but continue to ask “why” in relation to the world. Ad Minoliti aims to uncover fixed ideas about gender through her geometric expressions while questioning existing rules and standards. Yin Ho and Emi Otaguro use unique but familiar materials such as stone, carpet, and chewing gum; through their artwork, they explore their relationship with the world while creating original stories. The exhibition title “Science Window” is from the Japanese phrase “rika no mado.” The term, aimed at women, is derived from the more popular “shakai no mado (social window),” used jokingly to point out when a man’s zipper or fly to his pants is open. People lead their daily lives while hiding their private areas from society by securely fastening the fasteners of our pants or skirts. However, if the “window” were to accidentally remain open or consciously be kept open, private thoughts, feelings, and desires would be exposed to society. In this exhibition, the three female artists Ad Minoliti, Yin Ho, and Emi Otaguro promise the audience to keep their “windows” open.
