Sori Yanagi was a leading midcentury designer, and his masterpiece “Butterfly Stool” marked its 60th anniversary in 2016. This chair has been loved by people around the world as an icon of international furniture since it made its debuted at the first Yanagi Industrial Design Research Exhibition at Matsuya Ginza in 1956. This exhibition focusing on the unique form of the Butterfly Stool explores how it came about and how it has evolved. Look back on its more than 60 years of history seen through the models of its design process and first prototype, as well as other diverse elements including the Butterfly Stool’s the functions, technologies, and production site.
