Yang Bo
Yang Bo (b. 1991) moved from Hubei, China to Japan as a teenager and is now based in Tokyo. The artist took up painting in response to the dilemmas of inconsistency arising from a youthful love of pop culture and a sense of “mistranslation” resulting from physical distances and an undeterminable sense of place in the world. The artist’s work has frequently featured pop icons of the 1970s like David Bowie and Iggy Pop, depicted along with their words and episodes from their lives. “Heart of Glass,” the title of this exhibition, comes from a hit song by the band Blondie led by Debbie Harry, who also appears in the works of Andy Warhol and David Cronenberg. Here Yang Bo extends long-running themes of “pop receptivity” with new paintings featuring the face of Debbie Harry.
