Morihito Katsura
Living National Treasure Morihito Katsura is a metal artist who has lived and worked in Nerima Ward for many years. He is descended from a family of metal sculptors dating back to the Edo period of the 1600s. The Katsura school became renowned for its metal fashion accessories, such as ornately decorated tobacco cases. In addition to metal smithing, Morihito Katsura has been recognized in exhibitions of traditional Japanese crafts for outstanding skills in inlaying and decorative painting. His nationally recognized works have been purchased by the Imperial Household Agency. This exhibition explores the roots of Katsura’s work with pieces from his early to recent years, reaffirming his lifelong commitment to Edo metal sculpture.
