The Expertise of Specimen Preparation

National Museum of Nature and Science
Finished
Starting with the question “What is a specimen?” this exhibition introduces the little-known techniques used by the biology, botany, geology, anthropology, and Science & Engineering Departments of the National Museum of Nature and Science to prepare, repair, and preserve scientific specimens for research, exhibition, and archiving. Examples of specimens produced by these scientists with artisan-like skills are exhibited along with their tools and descriptions of their methods. There is also a recreation of a specimen lab and an exhibit of the manga “Henna Mono Mikke!” (Find Something Weird!), a behind-the-scenes look at the museum’s activities.
