William Morris et al.
William Morris (1834-96) was a designer, poet, thinker, craft artist, and more of the mid to late Victorian era. In an age where the industrial revolution was leading to mass production, Morris loved painstaking craftsmanship and produced many refreshing designs that emphasized natural beauty. Upon marriage, for his new residence the Red House, Morris realized that furniture and wallpaper were essential to creating the most comfortable living space and designed a beautiful wallpaper of engraved wood. Over 100 years later, the elegant wall of flowers continues to create a comforting space. Morris departed from the realistic style of the time with its sense of depth and instead created a new relationship between decoration and nature with a flat molding decorated with lively depictions of birds and flowers. This exhibit marks the first time 130 of Morris’ designs from the collection of leading British wallpaper producer Sanderson will be shown in Japan.
