Shiro Masuyama
The Belfast-based artist Shiro Masuyama uses a range of media including installations, performance, and film to stage “interventions” in the lives of people and cities. In “Tokyo Landscape 2020,” he addresses the landscape of contemporary Japan in the lead up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He is concerned with the contradictions surrounding the surge of construction and “redevelopment” following the Great East Japan Earthquake and the resulting issues of nuclear power. To Masuyama, who viewed these developments from outside the country, the simultaneous push for the Olympics and a policy of ending of financial support for people displaced by the disaster, combined with the ignoring of Olympics criticism and the taboo treatment of media covering the nuclear accident, were all grotesque. His installations on display here offer sharp rebukes of the situation. Other displays include work by kinetic artist Taira Ichikawa and a film documenting Geiger counter readings during a trip from Tokyo to Hiroshima in 2011.
