Art Trace Gallery is an artist-run gallery that was established in Ryogoku in 2004 and is participating in 3331 Art Fair for the first time this year. They have considered how to take a common interest in ‘the various relationships among artists, artworks, and societies’ to create something unique for this occasion. In the process, they landed on the concept of ‘constellation’ as a way to capture these complex, entangled, and multi-layered relationships in order to offer them comprehensive perspective.
Constellations and relationships are falsely similar. Whereas relationships are sought between items (A and B and C…), constellations are states of numerous relationships in being. Like how people since ancient times have freely connected and talked about the stars in the night sky, constellations set no rules on how things should be perceived – they are open to countless routes of interpretation. And like how we see constellations because the stars are several light years away from the Earth, constellations are closely linked to the question of distance. This isn’t just limited to physical distance – it could be temporal distance when you realise something after an experience in memory, or a psychological distance between you and the experience, or an objective distance that invites you to speculate on the experience.
12 members from Art Trace Gallery will participate in the exhibition. Throughout the period they will focus on the relationships that exist in between or within each work, as well as the constellations that can be drawn overlooking the expanse of works. In doing so, they seek to draw close to the viewer and the discoveries they make, to prompt dialogue and tell stories about the different forms of constellations they see.
