The Biwako Biennale started in 2001 is held once every two years in Shiga Prefecture’s Omihachiman, a castle town built by daimyo Hidetsugu Toyotomi and also known as the birthplace of Omi merchants. The eighth festival once again features homes and shops dating to the Edo period, this time repurposed by 70 international artists with the aim of preserving these historic buildings. Enjoy works by creators including metal sculptor Chu Enoki and contemporary installation artist Gabriela Morawetz in the atmosphere of old-fashion town with traditional architecture.
