Artists

Manika Nagare
Manika Nagare presents her increasingly diversifying body of work, including new paintings that explore the colors of traditional oil paintings. Her painterly expressions expand outward from the canvas and are meant to be experienced spatially, a feature resulting from collaborations with creators engaged with space or dance.

Nagare’s prismatic paintings feature brilliant yet subtle colors evoking unique textures where transparency and shading lay over one another. Her series ‘Traces of Colors’ revives the colors in painting from past eras while adding new interpretations. Starting with retracing the footsteps of the Impressionists, in this exhibition Nagare focuses on the artist Sanzo Wada “South Wind” (1907) as an attempt of Japanese modernist painting to capture the light of Western painting. Nagare is also currently engaged in the “Nihon no Iro” project in collaboration with the Nakagawa Color Lab, further expanding her engagement with expressions of Japanese color.
