Artists

Tazuko Hoshino
Born in Tokyo in 1927, Tazuko Hoshino studied oil painting under Kaoru Yamaguchi and Shigeo Mitsui in 1948. His first step towards becoming a doll maker came after he married in 1950 and began a family, soon using his eldest daughter as a model for the dolls he started to craft. He began exhibiting these dolls in the late 1950s at venues such as Takashimaya, and went on to hold many solo exhibitions and other events presenting his works thereafter. As his own children grew up, Hoshino took a break from his work as a doll maker, only returning to it with the arrival of his niece. He produced more than 300 dolls in the 60 years or so in which he worked. Here you can encounter the warm expressions of the children and animals that he created.
