Takao Niikura
Takao Niikura’s abstract paintings are expressions of private worlds that channel internal images inspired by nature. The innumerable lines of his works maintain an equilibrium, seemingly in dialogue with each other as their colors, brightness, and richness evoke the scents, glittering water surfaces, blazing heat, and refreshing coolness of various landscapes. The title of this exhibition, “Learning to Fly,” comes from a Tom Petty song. While working on these paintings Niikura observed a swallow’s nest, noting how every day the parents would feed the chicks gradually learning to spread their wings. Each day while creating these works he applied these lyrics to his own situation: “I’m learning to fly, but I ain’t got wings. Coming down is the hardest thing.”
