Long Life Design 1

Shibuya Hikarie 8/ d47 Museum
Finished
The meaning of the word “design” is slowly changing in two noticeable ways. First, “design” has shifted from being strongly led by influences from overseas and Tokyo to becoming more focused on local elements. Second, “design” has become much entwined with people’s lives on a longer timeline compared to previously when “design” was more closely tied with fashion trends and certain designers of a moment. In other words, “design” is transforming into “long life design”. Increasingly, “design” has become less centralized and more localized; rooted in local cultures. Unique and interesting design that is more Japan-like than ever is being created throughout the country. “Design” is becoming free of past constraints such as mass production, marketing, manufacturing speed, and so on. This exhibition examines the potential of this emerging “long life design”.
