The Colors of Urushi – From Jet Black to Gold and Silver

Sen-Oku Hakukokan Museum Tokyo
Finished
Urushi lacquer is one of Japan’s most important arts and crafts. Its many forms, including gold-and-silver powder maki-e, inlaid seashells, and seven-colored raden mother-of-pearl have enriched people’s lives with beauty for centuries. This exhibition draws from the Sumitomo collection to introduce works of urushi lacquer including tea ware, incense burners, and gorgeous modern pieces from Japan, the Ryukyu islands, Korea, and China. Lacquerware from China and the Ryukyu islands owned by prominent cultural figures is also presented.
