Hisui Sugiura
Hisui Sugiura (1876-1965) was a pioneer of Japanese modern design garnered recognition as a designer during the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods. After graduating from Tokyo Art School in 1901 and spending time at a printing company, as a teacher, and at a newspaper, Sugiura eventually became a designer for Mitsukoshi from 1908 until 1934. Sugiura also poured his energies into establishing the influential artistic associations Kofukai and Shichininsha. Among his influential works include the sketches of grass and flowers called ‘Hyakkafu’ (1920-1922) in which Sugiura transitioned from an art nouveau style to a simpler more Japanese style of expression. In 1935, he would become the first head of Tama Imperial Art School (later Tama Art University) playing a leading role in teaching design, and after the war chair of its board. This exhibition features 90 pieces from the museum’s Hyakkafu collection and shows Sugiura’s love of the mountains and its wildlife in the sketches of grass, flowers, and birds.
