Dagashi – Kosaku Ishibashi’s Love Affair with Traditional Hometown Sweets

Kosaku Ishibashi (1900–1976) was the second-generation owner of Ishibashiya, a Japanese sweets shop founded in Sendai in 1885 that is still in operation today. While making traditional hometown sweets with the shop’s confectioners, Ishibashi spent some 50 years researching “dagashi” penny candies from around the world. He recorded them in notes and drawings and even expertly designed clay replicas numbering more than 1,000. Ishibashi’s records are an invaluable account of dagashi, some of which no longer exist. The cultural contexts of these sweets shed light on the way people of their era lived. See some 200 examples of dagashi from across Japan, presented in books, artwork, replicas, and more.
