In the film industry, colorists play an important role in giving fictional worlds a sense of reality. Skillful coloring in animation in particular has the ability to bring characters to life and convey emotions, even when palettes are limited. Ghibli directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata emphasized from the early days of studio animation the use of color to imbue the everyday lives of characters with a sense of reality different from literal depictions to win the hearts of viewers. This exhibition spotlights the special color sense of both directors while introducing the cell-coloring techniques of the late color designer Michiyo Yasuda.
