Artists

José de Guimarães
The Portuguese contemporary artist José de Guimarães creates works featuring vivid colors and motifs that can be viewed as either human forms or letters and numbers. The designs in his artwork are inspired by Primitive Art he saw while living in Africa in his youth. This exhibition presents 40 works including some of the artist’s most important paintings and sculptures, along with African art from his own collection. Also featured is Shuntaro Tanikawa’s poem “Karappo” (Empty) inspired by Guimarães’s art, plus an animation based on a picture book version of “Karappo” illustrated by Guimarães.
