El Bocho
The second exhibition at 104Galerie for El Bocho showcases his latest large-scale paintings along with drawings and his ‘Little Lucy’ series. El Bocho’s new paintings overlay backgrounds of gold foil – reminiscent of European religious painting of the Middle Ages or work from the Japanese Rinpa School – with primary colors such as red, yellow, green and blue. Recently El Bocho has worked closely with the prominent German artist Rolf Biebl (b. 1951), who creates sculptural pieces in gold and bronze. In El Bocho’s paintings gold foil, a traditional material since the Middle Ages, is collaged with pop-style female characters in primary colors, a striking and fresh approach informed by his encounters with Biebl. The distinctive gold color and the expressions of the girls give a romantic impression to the work. Our “golden times” are flashes of self-awareness and moments of glory within our own lives. The explosions of thought that El Bocho captures so richly remind us of those sparks of gold. With dynamic strokes – whether on canvas or on street walls – El Bocho surprises, charms, and moves viewers in equal measure, remaining true to his core identity as a street artist.
