Ri Jong Ok
This exhibition is Ri Jong Ok’s first solo show at eitoeiko. Ri was born in 1991 in Tokyo as the third generation of a Zainichi (Korean people living in Japan) family and studied art at Korea University in Tokyo. She participated in group exhibitions with fellow students at her university as well as those of nearby Musashino Art University. As a young artist, Ri has been attempting to locate her standpoint in today’s world. She produces realistic portrayals of her subjects but it an artist who is aware that the picture is only a surface in itself. Her work indicates the stereotype behind the face. When you search the work “myth” in the online dictionary Weblio, one of the sample sentences taken from Kenkyusha English-Japanese Dictionary is: “We must explode the myth that some races were created superior by God.” The artist indicates that myth has the power to evoke a sacred concept, but at the same time becomes a stumbling block. The works have been produced with cooperation from C.R.A.C., who have given permission for the use of the photographs featured.
