Ryan McGinley
Ryan McGinley is currently one of the world’s most acclaimed photographers. Since 2001, when his talent was brought to the world’s attention with the release of his self-published book of photographs ‘The Kids Are All Right’ and when in 2003 when he chosen at the age of 25 as the youngest person ever to exhibit at the Whitney Museum in New York has become a darling of the art world. Through the uncertainty of his subjects, McGinley draws moments of joy from freedom and youthfulness whilst also capturing the emotional ebb and flow between ennui and sensitivity. 15 years into his career, McGinley continues to evoke a positive sensitivity that is certain to leave a lasting effect on 21st-century photography.
In 2012, McGinley held his first exhibition in Japan at the Tomio Koyama and in 2016 the exhibition “Ryan McGinley Body Loud!” was held at the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery. For the exhibition, McGinley himself selected 50 of his works for display and it proved to be a big success. This exhibition will be his first in Japan in two years.
“My NY” will display 10 pieces from “The Kids Were All Right” exhibition held in 2017 at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver. The works are all from the legendary book “The Kids Are All Right” in which McGinley shot his friends and fellow artists in downtown New York from 1998-2003. Also on exhibit are polaroids and early work shot for a zine and first displayed in the Denver exhibit. This exhibit is an exploration of the roots of McGinley’s artistic expression.
