Regine Schumann
First solo show in Japan by German artist Regine Schumann. Born in Goslar, Germany in 1961, Regine Schuman now resides and works in Cologne. Schumann has held many exhibitions in Europe and in the US and in 2000, spent some time in Tokyo on a scholarship from Land NRW. Her work is a combination of painting and three-dimensional objects using acrylic color sheets specially produced for her in collaboration with skilled craftsmen. Carefully regulating the amount of the pigment, which is often fluorescent, in the acrylic sheets and the degree to which they reflect or absorb light, she constructs her work out of these acrylic boards, using the different colors and characteristics just like a painter laying different colors of paint on canvas. Her work transforms depending on the light, enabling an ever-changing viewing experience that accentuates the relationship between color, light, and the surrounding space and creates a synchronicity of visible and invisible. Especially under black light, her work becomes luminescent and creates real color rooms in atmospherically charged oscillations and generates almost physically palpable experiences. Like Donald Judd and Larry Bell, Schumann is a minimalist, working with simple geometric forms and pure colors. But at the same time, since starting her career as a painter, she has strived for her work to emit color and energy into the surrounding space as in abstract expressionism or in the color field painting style of Mark Rothko.
