Seiya Shinotsuka
Compelled by the earthquakes that struck his home prefecture, Kumamoto in 2016, Seiya Shinotsuka began to think about a painting’s special character. A painting can commemorate images of horrific events disturbing to our eyes, seen in Picasso’s “Guernica,” for example, and Goya’s “The Third of May 1808.” Using this special character of a painting, Shinotsuka felt, he might be able to convey important, disturbing images and historical events to people of future generations. Until now, Shinotsuka has portrayed the landscapes, rocks, and trees of Kumamoto in semi-abstract paintings, based on his own experiences and memories. His works this time, however, do not recreate personal experiences but depict historical events. Still, he does not display facts as they are. Rather, he uses cows and meaty objects as motifs evoking events by association. These he depicts figuratively while referring to photographs in a manner different from before. His subject, if a cow, can be clearly perceived as a cow by anyone.
The title “Buffer” implies the softening or easing of a shock. By deploying his paintings as buffer material, Shinotsuka now desires to communicate incidents and situations that should be remembered and passed on in the future. This exhibition, Shinotsuka’s first in two years, presents more than 12 new works.

Born in Kumamoto prefecture in 1970, Shinotsuka graduated from Tama Art University with a Bachelor’s degree in Japanese Painting. His chief
exhibitions to date include: “MOT Annual 2006: No Border” (Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, 2006), “Picnic or Recurrent Migration” (Contemporary Art Museum Kumamoto, 2008), and “Grasslands” (Tsunagi Art Museum, 2014).
