Japan in Architecture: Genealogies of Its Transformation

Mori Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Rikyu Senno, Kenzo Tange, Rhizomatiks Architecture, Isamu Kenmochi, Daisaku Cho
From Kengo Kuma to Yoshio Taniguchi to Kazuyo Sejima and others, numerous Japanese architects are practicing all over the world. Behind their work perhaps we can find uniquely Japanese architectural aesthetics and ideas, such as a culture of building with wood and concepts of wabi sabi beauty. Structured around nine sections for interpreting Japanese architecture, this exhibition traces this lineage from ancient times to the present. Highlights include a full-scale replica of Sen no Rikyu’s Tai-an Tea House, a 1/3-scale model of Kenzo Tange’s home, and a new video installation by Rhizomatiks recreating famous examples of Japanese architecture such as the Nakagin Capsule Tower with fiber lasers.
