Sengai
Edo-period zen monk Sengai is known for his humor-filled zen paintings. Most of Sengai’s work was created after the age of 60 during a 25-year period when the monk was cloistered on the grounds of Shofukuji Temple in Hakata. In addition to zen themes, Sengai’s work often depicted common peoples’ daily lives, as well as landscapes and animals. This exhibition features over 95 works created during Sengai’s cloistered period.
