The Collection of the National Museum of Ethnology: Shell Road

Museum of Modern Art, Hayama
Finished
From ancient times, shells and shellwork have been a part of numerous indigenous cultures. Shell beads have been excavated from 100,000-year-old ruins, suggesting that shells have been more than just simple tools and have been strung together to represent authority, play important roles in rituals, and decorate costumes and masks. Introduced in this exhibition are approximately 160 examples of African, Asian and Oceanian, shellwork from the collection of the National Museum of Ethnology.
