Artists

Ken Matsunaga
Ken Matsunaga is a self-taught painter who utilizes unique techniques and styles in his unusual works. He has received numerous regional art prizes to date and held previous exhibitions in Tokyo, though this is his first solo show at Takashimaya.
Matsunaga paints on cloth such as cotton and hemp with black ink, creating dark backgrounds that he then applies oil paint to in order to allow monochrome subjects to emerge. He focuses primarily on people, young women in particular, as well as creatures such as insects and horses. His human subjects appear to drift in both a stateless exoticism, between the East and the West, and seemingly spiritual eroticism, but in reality they represent pure souls coming into view.
This exhibition will present around 10 paintings, including recent works and brand new pieces.
