Kakinomoto no Hitomaro
Waka poetry is a symbol of aristocratic culture. During the Heian period, aristocrats expressed their feelings and aesthetics through poetry. Those selected as “Immortal Poets” were depicted in paintings, their poetry transmitted to later generations in elegant kana calligraphy. The leading figure of the Immortal Poets was Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, and his painting was venerated as the tutelary deity of poetry. This year marks the 900th year of Hitomaro Eigu, the memorial ceremony of homage to Hitomaro. Commemorating this special year, masterpiece paintings of the Kasen-e, paintings of poets including the Important Cultural Property “Satake Version of the Thirty–six Immortal Poets” will be displayed with the representative’ calligraphic works of their poems.
