Nikkei or people of Japanese descent live all over the world as diaspora for various historical reasons. From September of 2017 to February of 2018, the Japanese American National Museum located in Los Angeles held the exhibition “Transpacific Borderlands: The Art of Japanese Diaspora in Lima, Los Angeles, Mexico City, and Sao Paulo. On display at this exhibition were works by Nikkei artists from Peru, the US, Mexico, and Brazil and these works directly, metaphorically, and abstractly reflected their experiences and identity in various regions of the Americas. Michiko Okano, who curated the Brazil portion of the exhibition will give a presentation on the activities of Nikkei artists in the Latin American communities of Latin and South America and Southern California.
