This exhibition presenting approximately 100 items from the Yokohama Civic Gallery, Azamino collection is organized around the theme of “Bodies in Photographs.” Since the birth of photography, human bodies have always been a key subject. Depending on who is being photographed, and the presence of the photographer, it is evident that the act of photographing triggers specific behaviors in sitters. As a result, the images produced say a lot about the personality and attributes of their subjects, as well as the spirit of the era during which they are taken. As modernization took hold, photography played an instrumental role in the process of observing, diagnosing and classifying the human body. Here you can explore how the image of the body in photography has developed through various items from the museum collection.
