Takeo Kimura
Born 100 years ago this year, Takeo Kimura (1918-2010) was a master of art direction for films. For over 60 years following his debut in 1944, he stood at the very forefront of the film industry. Just counting full-length movies that had theatrical releases- ranging from movies by major film studios to independent works by young artists- he had worked on over 240 films. He also worked with famous directors of widely differing personalities and styles, among them Shiro Toyoda, Tomotaka Tasaka, Seijun Suzuki, Kei Kumai, and Kazuo Kuroki.

Kimura contributed to numerous masterpieces with his bold creativity backed by detailed historical research and a versatility that allowed him to jump freely between realism and fantasy. He was also actively involved in the education of up-and-coming artists at universities and film schools. He remained active late in life, even making his debut as a director in his later years.

Held with the cooperation of Kyoto University of Art and Design’s Department of Film Production, which houses many of Kimura’s works, this exhibit follows the trajectory of Kimura’s thinking and the unique worlds he built as an art director. It features various precious items, including drawings and designs by Kimura.
