Numerous artists have portrayed the many heroes and feats of courage found throughout Japanese mythology and history. “Musha-e” warrior pictures in the late Edo period were a popular form of Ukiyo-e woodblock prints. The Meiji era brought a new genre known as “Rekishi-ga” historical paintings, and the significance and nature of these Rekishi-ga changed as wartime sentiment rose. With around 120 works including masterpieces of Ukiyo-e and modern Rekishi-ga, as well as works by contemporary artists, this exhibition lets you encounter heroes spanning the annals of Japanese history.
