Yuki Tawada

Yuki Tawada is a Yokohama-based artist who studied at University of the Arts London and the Tokyo University of the Arts graduate school. In her work she transforms the deeply psychological aspects of taking photographs into physically tangible images by repeatedly printing, cutting, scratching, and erasing the surfaces of the images with her own hands. She thinks of this ritualistic post-production process as close to a kind of therapy.

Tawada’s collage series ‘Shadow Dance’ (2012–) compiling fragments of images into multiple layers is both a self portrait and an autobiographical account of herself and the matrilineal side of her family, who cooperated in the burning of the shots. In ‘I am in You’ (2015–), for which Tawada and her mother burned images of crashing waves, she creates a sense of healing for the fear she harbored after the Great East Japan Earthquake.

This exhibition focuses on the new series ‘Family Ritual’ (2018), which Tawada developed using the same images of ‘I am in You’ but with the processes of her ‘ID (transitional)’ (2016) and ‘Shadow Dance.’ These new works switch out photographs from the other series with found photographs from public library archives, combining fragments of unrelated images into a new composite body given its own life.
