Artists

Atsuhiko Misawa
Atsuhiko Misawa (b. 1961) began “Animals,” his series of animal sculptures carved from camphor wood, in 2000. He currently produces these works in a studio in Kanagawa Prefecture. From familiar pets like dogs and cats to enormous beasts such as rhinoceroses and polar bears, to mythical creatures including unicorns, Misawa’s painted life-size animals inspire awe. Offering new perspectives on their beastly subjects with inimitably original expressions, these sculptures stir the viewer’s memories and imagination. Paintings, drawings, and sculptures including new works presented in the expansive, white-walled Yokosuka Museum of Art offer a valuable chance to experience the charm of Misawa’s menagerie.
